Recreation & Wellbeing updates on Coronavirus (COVID-19) – March 13

Additional program updates as of March 15, 2020

Effective March 15, 2020 the following programs and service will suspend all activities:

  • Golden Bears Youth Gymnastics (recreational classes and team practices) – through Tuesday, March 31.
  • UC Martial Arts (classes and open mat practices) – through Sunday, March 29.

Dear Recreation & Wellbeing members, participants, parents, and families,

Earlier today, the Chancellor announced that the university is switching to remote instruction for the remainder of the spring semester and campus operations will be limited. Recreation & Wellbeing is continuing to closely monitor and assess this dynamic situation, and consequently, the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19) and current public health guidelines on our operations. There are no confirmed cases of coronavirus on the Berkeley campus at this time.

While Recreation & Wellbeing programs, services, and facilities have remained open and we continue to employ precautionary measures in support of the health and safety of our customers and colleagues, we are taking the following additional action at this time:

Recreational Sports Facility (RSF)
Effective Monday, March 16, the building will close early until further notice.

  • Monday–Friday,  6 a.m.–8 p.m.
  • Saturday & Sunday,  8 a.m.–8 p.m.

California Memorial Fitness Center (CMS)
Effective Monday, March 16, the fitness center will CLOSE with an anticipated re-opening of Monday, March 30.

Spieker Pool
Effective Monday, March 16, open rec evening swim will end at 8 p.m., Monday–Sunday until further notice.

Hearst Pools
The Hearst pools will CLOSE starting Saturday, March 21 for Spring Break with an anticipated re-opening of Monday, March 30.

Intramural Sports Program
Effective Sunday, March 15, all games and competitions are CANCELLED through Spring Break with an anticipated return to play on Monday, March 30.

Sport Clubs
All Cal Sport Club programming is suspended through Spring Break. This includes practices, home and away competitions, travel, fundraisers, and in-person athletic training services. We anticipate returning to limited operations on Monday, March 30.

We appreciate your continued focus practicing social-distancing*, as well as your on-going efforts to properly clean contact surfaces and equipment before and after use.

Recreation & Wellbeing recognizes this is a dynamic situation and encourages all members of the campus community to support each other during this time. Recreation & Wellbeing leadership is meeting regularly to address and enact prevention and response efforts and remains available to answer questions and assist individuals, as needed.

*On-going social distancing practices: 

  • Cardio machine availability will be staggered to increase space between users.
  • Group X drop-in classes will be offered with modified capacity limits.
  • Weight room capacities will be altered to support more open space.
  • Class activities will be modified to focus on individual skills with no person-to-person contact.
  • Individuals will be asked to not congregate or queue if waiting for equipment.
