Ratings System
The IM Sports Rating System outlines how league standings, playoff seeding and divisional tiebreakers are determined across all sports.
- Ratings SystemaddIn general, division standings are determined by a team’s win/loss record (points total for Soccer). To break ties, head-to-head results are used, followed by sportsmanship average, and various offensive and defensive points metrics.
Standings
Division standings will be based on how well you fare within your league (Wins/Points/Winning%).Who Advances to Playoffs
In most cases, the top two teams in each division who do not have any forfeits – “no shows” – and have a FairPlay rating (sportsmanship score) of 3.5 or better will advance to the playoffs. Any wild card teams taken above and beyond the top two will be based on Rating score. The number of teams and playoff format is subject to change from season to season. Check the posted brackets (after week two) for playoff format and number of teams that will advance in each sport.“REC” Divisions
“REC” divisions are recreational leagues reserved for recreational teams. Participation is emphasized over keeping score and winning. There are no playoffs or prizes for “REC” divisions.Division Tiebreakers

FairPlay Program
The IM Sports FairPlay program was instituted to ensure that all IM Sports participants have an opportunity for recreation in the safest, most enjoyable atmosphere possible. IM Sports participants should not have to contend with ‘trash talking,’ excessively rough play or other forms of unsporting behavior.
A FairPlay rating (averaged over a season) below 3.5 renders a team ineligible for the playoffs.
- The baseline FairPlay rating for all games is a 4.0.
- A team that wins a game by an opponent’s “auto-loss” receives a 4.0 FairPlay rating
- A team that receives an “auto-loss” will receive a 3.0 FairPlay rating.
- A team that “forfeits” or “no-shows” receives a 1.0 FairPlay rating and is NOT eligible for playoffs.

5.0 (A): Exemplary
Team displays excellent sportsmanship. No unsportsmanlike technical fouls are issued, and the teams create an overall positive experience. All players cooperate fully with game managers about rule interpretations and calls. Team displays respectful conduct toward the opposing team, game managers, spectators, and teammates (e.g. retrieving balls after a foul, helping teammates and opponents to their feet, etc.). Regardless of the score or game situation, teams aim to create a positive atmosphere for all (e.g. complimenting and encouraging everyone involved in the game). Team does not intentionally run up the score if leading by a large margin. Team picks up after itself (i.e. throwing away empty water bottles, trash, etc.); captains do their best to ensure that the game runs efficiently and smoothly.
4.0 (B): Above Average
Team displays above average sportsmanship: All players respectfully address game managers about rule interpretations and calls. Captain exhibits full control over him/herself, their team, and fans. No team members engage in dangerous play or trash talking. Team members actively assist in getting games started on time (e.g. shirt colors are decided and all players are signed in and ready to start at scheduled game time). Substitutes, coaches, and fans stay off of the court, and observe rules regarding proper substitution procedures (e.g. not subbing into an active play). Team makes an active effort to learn and comply with IM Sport policy and game protocol. Players respond to game manager's warnings and requests. Team members refrain from retaliating or committing openly dangerous fouls, and captains help to effectively diffuse any potential player conduct situations.
3.0 (C): No ejections and/or 1-2 technical fouls – Slightly Below Average
Team displays a slightly below average sportsmanship. If any unsportsmanlike technical foul is issued, that team can earn no more than a 3.0 FairPlay rating. Team makes some comments to the officials on the court and/or sidelines throughout the contest and some players may show minor dissent. The team captain exhibits control over teammates and him/herself. Opposing teams communicate with one another as long as it is not detrimental to the spirit of the game (e.g. team members rarely engage in trash talking or taunting). Teams are excessively taunting or trash talking each other or unnecessarily running up the score against a hapless opponent (e.g. full-court pressing while ahead by 40 points). However, if despite one technical foul or an insatiable urge to run up the score, the team otherwise maintains its composure and recreational spirit, its rating will drop no lower than a 3.0.
2.0 (D): 1 ejection and/or 3+ technical fouls – Below Average
Team displays below average (“poor”) sportsmanship. Team consistently engages in dissent by word or action and engages opponents, teammates, and spectators verbally. The team captain exhibits little or no control over teammates, spectators, and/or him/herself (e.g. kicking the ball out of frustration after a play or call). Team members consistently engage in reckless play (excessive contact, “type 2” flagrant fouls, etc.). Team members engage in excessive trash talking that is offensive and disrespectful. Game gets out of hand to the point where IM Sports staff needs to intervene.
*Teams that receive 1 ejection can receive either a 2.0 (D) or 1.0 (F) FairPlay rating, depending on the behavior of the players/spectators following the ejection. If play continues and the player(s)/spectator(s) respect the call and leave(s) the field without further incident, the team may receive a 2.0. If play continues and the players/spectators continue with profanity, dissent, and/or disrespectful behavior, the team may receive a 1.0. A team with two ejections will automatically receive a 1.0 (F).
1.0 (F): 1-2 ejections and/or 4+ more cautions technical fouls – Unacceptable
An unacceptable display of sportsmanship. Team displays poor sportsmanship and is completely uncooperative. Captain has no control over him/herself, teammates, and/or spectators. Team creates an unsafe and hostile environment to the point where the supervisor and/or officials have to step in and stop the game (e.g. verbal and physical threats, punching, fighting, etc.). Other examples may include multiple ejections or joining in an altercation that has started (e.g. benches, spectators, or other participants leaving their respective areas). Also include teams that abuse or destroy Recreation & Wellbeing equipment/property or are under the influence of alcohol/drugs or use alcohol/drugs in recreational facilities (including tobacco products). 3 or more ejections by a team will cause the game to be called and ended immediately. The game will not be rescheduled and the team with the multiple ejections will forfeit the game and receive a Sportsmanship rating of 0.

1.0 (F): 1-2 ejections and/or 4+ more unsporting issues – Unacceptable
An unacceptable display of sportsmanship. Team displays poor sportsmanship and is completely uncooperative. Captain has no control over him/herself, teammates, and/or spectators. Team creates an unsafe and hostile environment to the point where the Site Supervisor has to step in and stop the game (e.g. verbal and physical threats, punching, fighting, etc.). Other examples may include multiple ejections or joining in an altercation that has started (e.g. benches, spectators, or other participants leaving their respective areas). Also includes teams that abuse or destroy Recreation & Wellbeing equipment/property or are under the influence of alcohol/drugs or use alcohol/drugs in recreational facilities (including tobacco products).
3 or more ejections by a team will cause the game to be called and ended immediately. The game will not be rescheduled and the team with the multiple ejections will forfeit the game and receive a Sportsmanship rating of 0.

- Making sure all of your teammates are eligible to play
- Being the leader on and off the field for your team and IM’s
- Checking season schedule regularly to insure no games are missed
If you have any questions regarding games, scheduling or general information, please feel free to contact the IM Sports office at ucbim@berkeley.edu.
- Team Name Policyadd
Any team name which promotes intolerance, degrades a racial, ethnic, gender or religious group, infers an explicit sexual reference or promotes destructive behavior such as that associated with alcohol or drugs is considered disrespectful to University members and the University community at large. Team names deemed inappropriate by IM Sports Staff, will be modified accordingly and disciplinary action may ensue.
- Conduct and Disqualificationadd
Good sportsmanship is essential in IM Sports contests. Therefore, if a player or players are sent off from a game, they will receive a minimum, automatic one game suspension. The suspension of that player becomes effective immediately following the ejection and carries through the remainder of that game, and the following game. While on suspension, the player is not allowed to participate in any IM Sports-sponsored sport, special event, activity, or IFC Sport. In extreme situations, the matter will be referred to the Office of Student Conduct.
- Picture Identification is Requiredadd
All participants must be prepared to show Game Officials a valid University of California, Berkeley, Student ID Card or a current Rec Club Card in order to participate in IM Sports. Individuals without current membership and picture identification will not be allowed to participate. A team unable to field a minimum number of players with current membership and picture identification will forfeit the contest.
- No Jewelry Policyadd
A player must not use equipment or wear anything that is dangerous to himself or another player, including any kind of jewelry. All items of jewelry are potentially dangerous. The term “dangerous” can be ambiguous and controversial, therefore in order to be uniform and consistent, any kind of jewelry is forbidden. Players are not allowed to use tape to cover jewelry, as taping jewelry is not considered to be adequate protection.
League Schedules
Captains should be watching the season schedule for updates and changes. Regular-season schedules will be posted by 5:00 p.m. the Friday before each season starts.
Eligibility
- All current undergraduates and graduate students are eligible for IM leagues
- All affiliate members with active memberships to the RSF
- A penalty of forfeiting the game goes to any team who has ineligible team members on the roster
Identification Checks
Before every IM contest all team members on the roster will have to show a current and active Cal 1 ID or RSF ID card with a picture of the participant. Failure to do so will result in the team member being unable to play that game.
Multiple-Team Participation
IM Sports participants are eligible to play in any number of sports, but may play on only one team per division. If a division has multiple levels of competition, participants must choose only one level of competition to compete in. Participants discovered to have played for multiple teams within the same division of the same sport shall be suspended for a minimum period of two games from the team which they appeared second. This suspension will carry through to all teams and sports that the participant is on. In addition, both teams that the participant played on can have all games in which the ineligible participant played forfeited. Frequent offenders of this policy may face longer suspensions.
Example: Tom plays on a Open B Soccer team on Tuesday, and plays on a Open A Soccer team on Thursday and on a CoRec Basketball team on Wednesday. Tom is registered on the Tuesday team and when it is discovered on Thursday that he plays for two teams, he becomes suspended for the next two games from his Thursday team. The suspension makes him ineligible to participate in any IM Sports activity until he has sat out two games from his Thursday team. Thus, he will be forced to miss two games from all teams that he participates on.
Waiver of Liability
All team members must individually sign their player waiver on IMLeagues after they have created an account. No waiver, no participation until it is completed.
Team Roster Information
Captains must complete the team roster before each game.Players can be added to the roster up until playoff start, after that the teams still playing will have a player lock on them.
The Team Roster shall be the primary source to judge all eligibility concerns.
The Divisions commonly offered by IM Sports are
- Open
- Women’s
- CoRec
- Recreational
There are no restrictions on the number of divisions in which an individual may participate.
Penalty
Any team using an ineligible player will forfeit all games in which the ineligible player participated. Forfeiture of a game precludes a team from entering or advancing through the playoffs.
Automatic Losses
Any team that is not following the rules and regulations outlined will have to forfeit the game, thus taking them out of contention for a playoff spot.
As a courtesy to other participants, teams and individuals are encouraged to arrive early enough to check in with IM Sports Staff. If a team absolutely cannot make a scheduled contest, the Team Captain should notify the IM Sports Office at least 24 hours prior to the date of competition to request an automatic loss to avoid receiving a forfeit.
For games occurring on Sundays, captains must notify the IM Sports Office by 4 p.m. on the Friday prior.
If the minimum number of eligible players are not present and ready to play at the scheduled game time, the contest is recorded as an automatic loss and a win awarded to the team fielding the minimum number of eligible players. An automatic loss does not affect a team’s chances of making the playoffs.
Forfeits
If the minimum number of eligible players do not show up within 15 minutes after the scheduled game time, the contest is recorded as a forfeit. A team must start with the minimum number of eligible players as stated in the rules for the sport or a forfeit is declared. A forfeit makes a team ineligible for playoff competition. If neither team has the minimum number of eligible players to start or finish a game, both teams shall receive a forfeit.
- Exception: In CoRec play, only the minimum number of eligible players (regardless of gender) is required to avoid a forfeit. However, an automatic loss will still be declared.
- IM Sports Staff may also abandon a game and declare a forfeit for player and/or spectator misconduct.
- During the first week of play, it is required that teams show up with at least the minimum number of eligible players to reserve their spot in the league. A team forfeiting their first scheduled game of the season may be removed from their league without a refund. The IM Sports Office will notify teams dropped from the league.
Playoff Schedules
Playoff schedules will be posted as soon as possible after the conclusion of the regular season. Teams should expect to play on short notice and at times different from their regular season schedule. Due to time constraints, rescheduling of playoff games is generally not available.
Playoff Eligibility
To be eligible for playoffs a player must be on the official online roster and must have played in at least one regular season game. Team rosters are not meant to be fluid. Players who have appeared in a game should not be removed without consent from IM Sports. Any player removed from a roster becomes ineligible in that same league/division and cannot be added back to the same roster or a different team roster later in the season.
- Protestsadd
Effective Spring 2017: As IM Sports employs amateur student officials, mistakes and judgement errors may occur - effective immediately, protests based on misapplication of a playing rule or an error in judgement will not be accepted. Protests based on participant eligibility will still be considered.
Playoff Protest
Due to time constraints, interpretive protests during playoff contests will be decided by the IM Sports Staff on site. The decision of IM Sports Staff is final and may not be appealed.
- Sportsmanshipadd
The IM Sports goal is participant recreation and enjoyment. It is expected that all participants will conduct themselves in a manner that will not impair the enjoyment of other participants. All actions and comments, whether directed at game Officials, opponents, teammates or spectators should be constructive and conducive to fulfilling this goal.
IM Sports insists on good sportsmanship. To foster a positive atmosphere and attitude for recreation and competition and encourage teams and individuals to take responsibility for their actions and comments, IM Sports Staff will review each contest to determine whether actions that are detrimental to the goal of IM Sports were exhibited.
Actions that are dangerous and/or conduct that is detrimental to the goal of IM Sports are not tolerated and are grounds for suspension from further participation in IM Sports. Examples of unsportsmanlike behavior and conduct detrimental to the goal of IM Sports include, but are not limited to:
- Striking or any attempt to strike an opponent or IM Staff member
- Unsportsmanlike conduct penalties
- Aggressive action toward a participant or IM Sports Staff member
- Profanity, insulting or vulgar language or gestures – incidental or otherwise
- Verbal or physical taunting
- Actions that may lead to a fight
- Attempts to influence the decision of a game Official
- Dissent toward an IM Sports Staff member’s decision
- Failure to cooperate with IM Sports Staff
- Ejectionsadd
Any captain, coach, participant or spectator ejected from an IM Sports contest for any form of unsportsmanlike conduct is suspended immediately and indefinitely from all IM Sports activities. In all instances, the suspension is immediate and for a minimum of one week*.
IM Sports will notify the ejected participant (or captain) via email on the length of suspension within 5 business days of the ejection. The suspended participant may appeal their suspension by submitting a written appeal to the Recreation & Wellbeing Conduct Review Committee (RSCRC). Appeals are only considered by the RSCRC and are not considered by IM Sports. All details related to filing an appeal will be relayed in the email from IM Sports.
*If an ejected individual plays more than one IM Sport, the suspension is in effect until after the individual’s next game for the team he was playing when he was ejected. For example, Joe Participant plays Soccer in a Sunday league. Joe also plays Basketball on Wednesday and Volleyball on Thursday. If Joe is ejected during Soccer, he must sit out his next Basketball, Volleyball, and Soccer games. If he meets with an IM Sports Staff member to be reinstated, he may participate in Basketball the second week pending reinstatement.
Penalty
A team using a suspended player forfeits all games that the suspended player participates in. Teams knowingly using such a player may face additional sanctions.
Recreation & Wellbeing Conduct Review Committee
Participants who have been ejected and suspended from IM Sports have the option of appealing their suspension to the Recreation & Wellbeing Conduct Review Committee (RSCRC) to be reinstated. The RSCRC – not IM Sports – reviews all written appeals.
Probation
Participants ejected from a contest are automatically placed on probation for a minimum of 365 days after completing the suspension. Any further unsportsmanlike behavior during this probationary period results in a minimum 365-day suspension from all IM Sports activities.
Fighting
Any coach, participant or spectator who, in the judgement of IM Sports Staff, engages in an attempt to fight immediately before, during or after an IM Sports contest is suspended indefinitely from further participation in IM Sports activities. The minimum suspension for fighting is 365 days. Additionally there will be no toleration for fighting with IM Sports staff or volunteers. Any violation will result in a minimum of a five-year suspension from IM sports.
Behavior classified as fighting includes, but is not limited to:
- Striking or attempting to strike an individual
- Engaging an individual in a combative manner
- Throwing a punch at an individual
- Spitting at an individual
- Kicking or attempting to kick an individual
- Brandishing a foreign object or weapon with intent to harm, injure, or intimidate an individual
- Retaliating against an aggressive act
Penalty
A team using a suspended player forfeits all games that the suspended player participates in.
Teams knowingly using such a player may face additional sanctions.
Leaving the bench to get involved in an altercation will result in the above sanctions for fighting.
Office of Student Conduct
In some instances, the IM Sports Office will forward copies of Incident Reports to the campus’ Office of Student Conduct. IM Sports participants involved in threats or acts of verbal assault or physical violence are subject to possible Office of Student Conduct proceedings and investigation from University of California law enforcement. Incidents in which violence or the threat of violence is demonstrated are referred to the Office of Student Conduct and the University of California Police Department.
FairPlay Outline
Refer to the top of this page for a full explanation of Fairplay Guidelines.
Excessive Individual Unsportsmanlike Conduct
If an individual accrues excessive fouls of unsportsmanlike conduct (technical fouls, yellow cards), he will be subject to suspension. Three such fouls in any league of a single sport will result in a suspension of one week in addition to any other penalties earned. Subsequent fouls may merit longer suspensions at the discretion of the Program Director. Straight ejections count as two fouls towards this total. For example, Player A plays IFC basketball and Open B basketball. He accrues a technical foul in his Tuesday B league in Week 1 and 2, and in his Wednesday IFC league in Week 3. He receives a one-week suspension that expires at the end of his team’s 4th IFC game.
Game Card Signatures
After the conclusion of each game, it is the responsibility of both Team Captains to confirm the final score as well as Sportsmanship points received. Team Captains are encouraged to verify these with the Site Supervisor and on IMLeagues before leaving the game site.
