The secret to UC Berkeley Youth Recreation’s legacy of excellence is our dedicated staff.
We employ hundreds of local teenagers, college students, recent graduates, and adults as instructors, camp counselors, and counselors-in-training each year. They enjoy an inclusive work environment while building work skills and leadership skills that help prepare them for any future career path.
While participants learn from the instructors and year-round employees, our counselors and instructors are learning essential work skills such as communication, conflict resolution, professionalism, teamwork, and leadership — all skills the National Association of Colleges and Employers lists under their top 10 competencies desired by employers.
All positions are posted online to Handshake for college students and Talent Acquisition for all other applicants. If you want to learn more, each position below lists more information and the appropriate posting numbers.

- JC / CIT CoordinatoraddJC / CIT Coordinator (Handshake #7339911)EXPLANATION OF JCs and CITs: Junior Counselors (JCs) and Counselors-in-Training (CITs) are the junior staff members at Blue and Explorer Camp. JCs and CITs are high schoolers who serve as support staff for program instructors and group leaders. Their responsibilities vary widely, from activity setup and supporting the Group Leaders and Instructors, to running in-camp errands for the Leadership and Operations staff. In addition to serving as support staff, JCs and CITs receive guidance and leadership training from their Teen Leadership Program Lead and JC/CIT Coordinator to help them learn how to be effective employees and give them the skills to excel and advance in future careers.
The JC/CIT Coordinator has two main responsibilities: the first is to manage the scheduling of the junior staff. The bulk of staff scheduling is completed at the beginning of each session in the form of a chart that denotes where all junior staff are stationed throughout the camp day. Adjustments of the Junior Counselor (JC) and Counselor-in-Training (CIT) schedule are often needed throughout the session to account for staff absences and group dynamics. The second main responsibility is to provide feedback and guidance to help improve the abilities of the junior staff. In addition to a midsummer and end-of-summer evaluation for all junior staff, weekly meetings are held where junior staff can check in about difficulties or questions. The JC/CIT Coordinator also provides additional guidance in the form of team building exercises or games. Junior staff are high schoolers, for many of which this may be their first job. This is an opportunity for them to learn how to conduct themselves, how to interact with supervisors, and generally how to be functional professionals. A facet of the JC/CIT Coordinator position is modeling the same behaviors that you are trying to instill in the junior staff.
