Lifeguards

Becoming a lifeguard is one of the most rewarding positions one could have, but it is no easy task. The lifeguard provides an important public service and creates a safer, happier experience for swimmers just by being poolside and ready to potentially save a life. With people’s lives in your hands, we must require that applicants are qualified individuals with passion and love of swimming and water sports.

Position

Recreation & Wellbeing lifeguards are expected to:

  • Participate in all staff meetings and trainings.
  • Enforce pool safety rules.
  • Rescue a distressed and/or drowning patron(s).
  • Provide first aid to a distressed patron(s).
  • Assist patrons with membership services including program schedules, facility amenities, answer facility and program-related questions and provide general information when needed.
  • Open and close facility(s) and work flexible hours including weekends and holidays.

Qualifications

All lifeguard employees must hold current certifications in Lifeguarding, CPR, AED and First Aid through American Red Cross (or equivalent certifications in another organization).

Work Hours

Lifeguards may work 5-19 hrs/wk during the Spring/Fall semester and up to 40 hrs/wk during the academic breaks. This is a semester-by-semester position and lifeguards are allowed to request minimal time off throughout any given semester. Aside from major holidays (e.g. Spring Recess, Christmas or Thanksgiving) lifeguards are required to work holidays where we offer programming if their regular schedule calls for it.

Adult Swimming Instructor

Join the dedicated team at the UC Berkeley pools to help further swimmers’ knowledge and love for the sport as a year-round instructor.

Position

Teach group or private lessons based on American Red Cross standards and program requirements. Assist users with membership services including program schedules, facility amenities, and general information. Answer facility and program related questions. Open/close facility when needed.

Qualifications

Required: American Red Cross Adult First Aid, CPR & AED (or equivalent certifications in another organization).

Work Hours

Students may work 5-20 hrs/wk during the quarter and up to 40 hrs/wk during the academic breaks.

Youth Swimming Instructor

Position

Teach group and private lessons based on American Red Cross standards and program requirements. Participant ages range from infant (6 months) to 16 years-old. Programs include Parent/Infant group lessons, Tiny Tots group lessons, Learn to Swim Levels 1-6 group lessons, Competitive Swim group lessons, Pre-Team swim program, private and semi-private swim lessons, and Noodle Ball.

Qualifications

Required: American Red Cross Adult & Pediatric (Child and Infant) First Aid, CPR & AED (or equivalent certifications in another organization).

Work Hours

Students may work 5-20 hrs/wk during the quarter and up to 40 hrs/wk during the academic breaks.

Strawberry Canyon Weekend Supervisor

Position

The Strawberry Canyon Recreation Area (SCRA) Weekend Supervisor is responsible for overseeing activities in the facility. Those include, but are not limited to: open/close of pool, customer relations, emergency response, and more.

Qualifications

Required: Attention to detail. Must be highly organized, punctual, and reliable. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Effective public and interpersonal skills and interest in working with public. Ability to lift 50 lbs. without accommodation.

Work Hours

Weekends 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. (May – October)

RecWell Pool Access Monitor

Job Type: Part-Time, Student position 

Pay Rate: $18.99

The Pool Access Monitor ensures that patrons using the pools at Golden Bear Recreation Center (GBRC) and Strawberry Canyon Recreation Area (SCRA) during open recreation are RecWell members or have purchased day-use passes. 

The Pool Access Monitor will be stationed at the pool entrance and will scan student and non-student member cards and verify RecWell memberships. They will also check that purchased day-use passes are valid and provide information to patrons about how to purchase them remotely as needed. 

The Pool Access Monitor must be available during open recreation pool hours which may vary seasonally. Position reports to the RecWell Recreation Operations and Services Supervisor and will assist the Aquatics Director and Assistant Director as needed.

Position

  • Ensuring all patrons using the pools have a RecWell membership or valid day pass. 
  • Use Fusion to confirm membership status
  • Use a laptop and portable scanner to check Cal 1 Cards and membership cards
  • Confirm that day passes are valid
  • Instruct patrons on how to purchase day passes remotely
  • Refer patrons to the RecWell website and the Customer Service Center for inquiries and membership details.
  • Arrive 15 minutes before the pool opens to set up an access monitoring station at GBRC or in the booth at SCRA.
  • Assist Aquatic personnel as needed
  • Complete Campus and Departmental training within the first 30 days from the job start date.

Qualifications

Actively enrolled UC Berkeley student with at least one semester remaining of employment eligibility.

Work Hours

Student employees are eligible to work up to 40 hours weekly during school breaks, and up to 20 hours weekly during the school year.  This is a seasonal position open with our pool and summer recreational facilities, typically May-October. The hours will vary amongst weekdays, weekends, and holidays as necessary.
