Leona Canyon

Nature • Hike • Local History

The creek is a nature nugget, no foolin’

A tucked away Oakland hills gem, Leona Canyon is a local favorite for its dramatic canyon walls and year-round running creek. You’ll immediately be transported to a Fern Gully-esque open space with myriad varietals of local fauna and flora. The trail starts at a gradual incline and slowly gets steeper, allowing for hikers to tailor their own level of challenge.

To add to the other-wordly feel, nearby there is a defunct sulphur mine. From the 1890s to 1934, sulphur was profitably mined in the underground tunnels for sulfuric acid. Upon discovery it was believed to be gold, but imagine their disappointment to discover it was the far less precious iron pyrite – also known as Fool’s Gold. The entrance is blocked off, so keep your explorations to the surface to be safe!
